Your Essential New Home Checklist!

Getting your first home is very exciting and there are lots of things to remember – sorting out legal stuff like banks, utility companies and insurance.  Then there is the more fun side like sorting out the essentials you need to stock your new home.  There are lots of things to remember and it can be easy to lose track of what you need so here is a handy overview to help you organise your shopping efforts.

The Kitchen
In terms of the number of items required, the kitchen is the most demanding room in the house.  Sure, it might not cost as much as other rooms but there are a lot of items to consider, some essential and some maybe not quite as much so.

First up, there’s the big stuff like the cooker, fridge/freezer, washing machine and possibly a dishwasher.  The first three of these are definitely needed before you move in but a dishwasher might be an optional extra for another time.  You will need an electrician to fit the cooker and a plumber for the washing machine but fridge/freezers are simply plugged in.

Next up think about the items you will use every day.  Cutlery, plates & bowls and pans are usually first on the list.  You may also want baking trays for cooking things in the oven and some kitchen knives are always in use.  Look at the small appliances that you need – kettle, microwave, toasters are usually people’s priority while items such as grills, coffee machines and blenders may also feature.

Living & Dining Rooms
Obviously the living room is centred around relaxation and comfort.  A sofa or two or chairs are the primary items to consider, depending on the size and shape of the room.  Coffee tables are useful and look good while a TV unit may be needed depending on your style.  Bookcases are popular in a living room depending on space or shelving for ornaments or collections.

The dining room centres around the dining table and chairs but if you have extra room, you can consider corner accent tables or shelving.  Don’t forget tablemats and coasters for the table to keep it in good condition as well as a nice centrepiece for the table.  Glassware can be kept in the dining room in a cupboard or welsh dresser if there is room.

Upstairs
Start in the bedroom with the bed and don’t forget pillows, quilts and relevant bedding.  You will need a wardrobe unless there is a fitted one and probably some drawers, maybe a bedside table as well.  Then you can look at extras such as bookshelves or other storage.

In the bathroom, much of the furniture will be in place so you will just need to add the things you use.  This is usually based around toiletries and bathroom linen such as towels and bath mats.  Mirrors are popular and practical, adding space as well as being useful.

Other Essentials
Think about putting together a tool kit to do basic jobs around the house - a screwdriver or two, a hammer, tape measures and pliers are the most commonly used items.  You may also want a little first aid kit including plasters, bandages, antiseptic cream and maybe some gauze – accidents do happen when you are moving house!
